Check guide ยท On the wire
Datacenter pattern
Does the network this IP belongs to look like a hosting provider?
What this check is
Every IP address belongs to a network with an owner. This check reads the owner name of the network the request came from and asks a simple question: does this look like a company that rents servers, or like a company that sells internet access to households? People browse from the second kind. Bots are usually hosted on the first.
What Tells reads
- The ASN organization name Cloudflare reports for the connecting IP
- A name-pattern heuristic over that organization name
How to read your result
- Warning: The network owner's name resembles a hosting or datacenter provider.
- Pass: The owner reads as a consumer or business ISP.
- Not available: No network owner was reported for this connection.
Why it matters
It is the cheapest reputation question a site can ask, and it is asked about every request. A hosting-range IP does not get a session banned by itself, but it starts the conversation in debt: everything else the browser does is read in that light. It is also the finding most often responsible when a technically clean browser still scores badly from a VPS or a corporate egress range.
Where this matters most
Across the platforms Blowhorn works with, rated in the platform guide (H = matters a lot, M = contributes, L = no public evidence; tags mark vendor-stated, reported, or inferred evidence):
- LinkedIn (M): datacenter egress is a classic checkpoint trigger for a fraud-sensitive login [Reported]
- X (H): datacenter IPs are flagged far more aggressively than residential ones [Reported]
- Reddit (H): server IPs get much stricter limits and scrutiny [Reported]
- Hacker News (M): datacenter-origin accounts attract the spam filter [Inference]
Everywhere else in the set this one rates Low.
In your report
Find it in the checks table on the tool page, with the detail in
the Network identity section. The same findings appear in the
report JSON under verdict.reasons, and the agent guide explains
how to read them programmatically.
